I really don’t get why they fight in hockey. I mean, I’m from Florida so I really don’t get hockey at all, but isn’t it bad sportsmanship?

Nope. Boxing isn’t unsportsmanlike, is it?

Hockey is a physical game, so there are bound to be grudges between players. They might as well let the guys scrap it out instead of letting the hits get dirtier and dirtier until someone gets REALLY hurt. Refs always break up the fight before someone gets knocked out cold or is clearly getting his ass whooped. Both guys are willing to get hurt, there’s nothing unsportsmanlike about that. Cold-cocking someone out of nowhere is unsportsmanlike.

For the guys who grew up around the game (I was on a pond playing basically every day from Thanksgiving to St. Patrick’s Day for my youth) it’s more honest to fight and get it over with than simmer a grudge and take a cheap shot on a guy later.

Keep in mind too, knowing a bigger guy is around and willing to drop the gloves may make you think twice about putting too hard of a hit on their key players, or a player above you pay grade.

The fighting serves a few purposes. One, there is never a butt in a seat during a fight, the energy they give to an arena and your linemates is ridiculous. Two, it is a show of force to the other guys on the ice. If you know that Player X on your team is a guy you are happy to have in your corner and the toughest guy you know, and he gets his tail whooped, you’re thinking twice about the team on the other bench.

Fighting is honest, the instigator rule is not.

Don’t get me wrong, MMA is my favorite sport to watch. It’s just that you don’t really see fights like that in football, soccer, etc.

Fighting isn’t as prevalent as it used to be, and I think a lot of that has to do with the hard salary caps instituted. It’s too bad, because seeing guys like this get paid a couple hundred grand a year to do this was a hell of a sight to see!

Sometimes it’s a pride thing. If a team is losing badly, in this case, the Senators were getting blown out by a not so good team... It’s like a way to say “Hey, even though we’re going to lose this one, we still got pride and such.”

Also there are sometimes dirty hits or things that the refs miss, so sometimes players... take things into their own hands. I’ve seen players get injured and a shift or two later, a fight breaks out to stand up for that player.
